Day 1: Thursday

31Jul03

We arrived in St. Thomas late last night. We tried to grab a bite to eat at Coco Joes, but the $35 buffet was the only thing available. One of the other hotel restaurants was still open so we enjoyed a quick snack before dinner. This morning we woke up around 9:00 and headed into town to enjoy the shops. I purchased my official vacation hat (a Panama Jack hat that will only be cool while I’m on this particular vacation), Mom bought some earrings and Jen bought a Corona key ring holder. Dad was finally persuaded to purchase some cigars to enjoy on the boat. After all, we’re on vacation. After shopping we caught a quick taxi to pick up our luggage and meet Arno and Petra at the American Yacht harbor. The Belline II is a gorgeous boat and Arno and Petra are very welcoming. Arno even let me drive the boat to our first stop, St. John.

When we got to St. John we had a quick swim before lunch and then enjoyed a lovely fresh shrimp salad. Petra needed to go into shore to check out the boat (we’re heading to the BVIs tomorrow morning) so we all joined her to take a look around the island. After all the rough taxi rides, choppy seas to St. John, and a rather jostling dingy ride to shore, Mom wasn’t exactly the most comfortable she’d ever been. We took a quick stroll through town, looked at things we didn’t want to buy, and then sat down for a drink on the beach before heading back to the boat. After another quick swim we motored to a beach on the other side of St. John to drop anchor for the evening. The family took the kayaks ashore to explore the beach and poke jellyfish with sticks while Petra and Arno stayed aboard to prepare dinner (turkey breast). Dinner was fantastic, the scenery amazing, the food incredible, and the company is great. It gets dark rather early, around 7:30, so we watched Mr. Deeds before bed. I’m not sure what well be doing tomorrow, but it is sure to be incredible.
